Weaving Stories:
A Journey into India’s
Handloom Heritage

For centuries, the hand weavers and fabric makers of India have created intricate masterpieces, preserving time-honored techniques that breathe life into every thread. This project seeks to capture the soul of these artisans — the hands, the tools, the rituals — that sustain the rich tradition of handloom and hand-spun fabric. In the village of Kiwar, Moradabad, the Ali family embodies this legacy. Through my lens, I document their intimate process of creating khadi — from dyeing vibrant yarns, spinning fibers with rhythmic precision, to weaving the fabric that holds generations of skill.
Ishrat works closely with his father and family, forming a tight-knit community where each artisan specializes in a stage of khadi production. Their nearby shared workspace reflects a tradition woven through family cooperation. This series honors not just the fabric but the stories, daily rhythms, and craft behind khadi weaving.
